September 19, 2014 "Path to Success" The path to being affluent, where you can have $100 bills pinned to your cart, albeit monopoly money, one has to be willing to routinely engage in a task in a very mature way. A simple lesson from a guy living on the streets. Someone asked me recently, why is it that black people do not seem to trust financial institutions? My answer, "back in the late 1800's the Freedmen's Savings and Trust, the bank responsible for receiving deposits from black soldiers and runaway slaves working on the Union garrisons, was implicated in a massive fraud. This resulted in the bank closing and a sum of $2,993,790.68 belonging to 61,144 depositors was never repaid. Blacks have been cynical ever since. September 14, 2014 "Songs of Solomon" Truth is a funny thing. If you are open, it comes from the most unlikely of sources. Everyone who follows me knows by now, I question race relations or economic classes. This morning while walking from breakfast I happened upon a man sleeping on a park step in Chinatown. The first thing I saw was the word bellowing boldly above his head as he napped. We then went on a rant, pointing fingers as to who the word "who" was referring to. We both pointed fingers at "the man" who we agreed was responsible for keeping the poor underfoot. But then he said something that really caught me off guard. He looked up to the sky and said, "The Almighty, however, is my who. He is the who that is going to change my circumstances. When I first came here I didn't see the words, but I can see now why my spirit would have guided me here. I look for Art everywhere in this city, too, just like you," he said smiling, his coffee coloured teeth proudly grinning. I was not expecting that God piece at all. "Amen" was the word that crossed my mind after he spoke.
