Just after the airplane crossed over from Colorado to Utah I looked down and could hardly believe my eyes. Its not that I havent seen the brutal grids of fracking well pads all over the US but juxtaposed with the natural curves of Utahs White River the intensity of the destruction was mind blowing. #Fracking not only depletes local #water sources and produces toxic and sometimes radioactive fracking fluid simply known as flowback but it also pollutes the air and can seriously sicken communities nearby. On #EarthDay2016 I recommend all of you to take a minute to read an eye-opening article I recently came across in The Nation by Bill McKibben on how badly the natural-gas infrastructure has been bleeding methane into the atmosphere. Using satellite data and ground observations Harvard researchers concluded that the nation as a whole is leaking methane in massive quantities. Between 2002 and 2014 the data showed that US methane emissions increased by more than 30 percent accounting for 30 to 60 percent of an enormous spike in methane in the entire planets atmosphere. These leaks are big enough to wipe out a large share of the gains from the Obama administrations work on climate changeall those closed coal mines and fuel-efficient cars. In fact its even possible that Americas contribution to global warming increased during the Obama years. - Photo by Balazs Gardi (@balazsgardi) @azdarya #everydayUSA #USA #Utah #fracking #pollution #watercrisis #earthday #climatechange #azdarya by everydayusa
