South Side - Chicago For more than 100 years Chicago's South Side was home to the center of industrial power in the world. US Steel and many other companies produced all forms of products. It was the industrial heyday of America. U.S. Steel's site in South Chicago was called South Works which was shuttered in 1992 and the site has mostly lay vacant. Today there is a grand plan to rebuild it championed by Lakeside Development among others.
