Chicago's South Side - Bronzeville Site of athe former Crispus Attucks Elementary School. Attucks was one of the schools that was shuttered in the largest public school closing in U.S. history. In 2013 52 public schools were closed with the promise by Mayor Rahm Emmanuel that this would help improve the educational system better for the students. The vast majority of the schools were in the poorest parts of the city on the South and West sides. The school once stood in the middle of the largest public housing corridor in the United States which housed the Robert Taylor homes and Stateway Gardens. They were demolished in the ten year Plan for Transformation. The school was named for Crispus Attucks, a major symbol of the anti-slavery movement in the 18th century.
