I'm on highway 23 in central Appalachia near the border of Virginia and Tennessee. This is Benge's Gap. Chief Benge was part white and part Cherokee. He was known to seize white women and children and put them with native families. Was this some sort of reparation for all of the colonial slaughtering he bared witness to?
