King Talk: With each new police killing, past stories fall further down the list. Nicholas Hayward's son Nicholas Jr., was killed by Ofc. Brian George in the stairwell of the Gowanus houses in Brooklyn 20 years ago. He was only 13 years old. Officer George claimed he thought Nicholas's toy gun was a a real one. Mr. Heyward often attends marches and speaks to families who have also lost their children. Last month he stood in the lobby of the building where Akai Gurley was killed, also in a stairwell. by a policeman who claimed it was an accident. Mr. Heyward brought with him posters and pictures which he taped on the wall. Around his neck, he wore a clapboard with pictures of people who had been killed, including a photo of his young boy.
