LCpl. Thomas Welch secures the entrance of a compound his team set base at near Doghaka village in Musa Qala district #Helmand Province #Afghanistan on November 7, 2010. We hear firefight from a distance. The enemy was clearly visible. LCpl. Robert Vandergriff stands next to a 10-inch-thick adobe wall that surrounds the compound. A large chunk is missing from the top of the wall so Vandergriff can clearly see the cemetery in the distance. He reports 10 men on a rooftop, but there’s too much distance to effectively engage with the machine gun. We can’t do much but observe and wait. I tell LCpl. Kevin Daly, who is securing the entrance of the compound at the opposite side of the courtyard, that I see bullets hitting the ground near his position. He then tells us that he saw at least two insurgents behind us with AK-47s but that they quickly disappeared behind the neighboring compound. Welsh is constantly on the radio, messaging the combat operations center and the ambush team. He tells them that the insurgent commander is telling his fighters over the radio that he was pleased with the previous attack and has given orders for them to engage a second time.
