September 9, 2014 "Exercising Our Rights" Today New Yorkers took to the ballots to vote for the primaries. However, while talking to the volunteers who were standing outside the schools giving out flyers, there was an overwhelming attitude that voter turn out was very low today. "If we do not vote how are we going to change the situations that make our communities miserable," said one of the volunteers A civil rights leader once said that democracy was only decades old rather than centuries -- that not until the 1965 Voting Rights Act when blacks could vote did democracy truly begin. One of my neighbours said that he did not vote because he was not sure what the people on the ballot stood for. Another said that he was tired and couldn't make it over to the school. Voting is thought to be the most important thing a person can do in America, however Blacks continue to stay away from the ballots.
