King Talk: September 3, 2014 "Homage to my Childhood" 2/6 For me this was the part of my culture that went bumping in the night. The rolling calf, the black heart man and the devil were the stories that our parents use to whisper across from kerosene lamps as we snuggle under their armpits in the darkness. Every year when I go out to photograph Jouvert, I go to not only reclaim my childhood, but to exorcise those stories that use to paint my nightmares. This is me confronting the dark faces in my story and also understanding the role they played in nurturing a folklore and a culture.
